- Rain soaks into open debris and adds weight, which can push a load past the weight allowance.
- Summer heat softens asphalt driveways. Plywood under the container and a morning delivery help.
- Saturated lawns and soft ground can make placement or pickup unsafe for the truck.
- A tarp secured with bungee cords is the practical way to keep rain out of an open roll-off.

Rain Adds Weight
Roll-off dumpsters are open-topped, so rain falls straight onto your debris. Drywall, carpet, mattresses, cardboard, and yard waste soak up water and get heavier. That matters because every container has a weight allowance: 1 ton on the 10 yard, 1.5 tons on the 15 yard, 2 tons on the 20 yard, and 4 tons on the 30 yard, with $85 per ton over the allowance.
A load that would have been comfortably under the limit on a dry week can creep over it after a few days of rain. Our weight limit guide explains how tonnage is measured.
Covering the Container
Roll-off containers in these sizes do not come with hard lids. If rain is in the forecast, a heavy-duty tarp secured with bungee cords is the practical solution. It keeps water out of absorbent debris and also discourages neighbors from adding their own trash.
Remove or fold the tarp back before pickup, and make sure nothing is piled above the top rail underneath it. A covered container still has to meet the same fill rules.
Summer Heat and Soft Asphalt
Middle Georgia summers are hard on asphalt. Asphalt softens as it heats up, and on a 95 degree day the surface of a blacktop driveway can pass 140 degrees. At that temperature, a loaded container can leave impressions that stay after the surface cools.
- Use plywood under the container on asphalt during summer, especially for heavy loads.
- Ask for a morning delivery so the container goes down while the surface is cooler.
- Remember that the container gets heavier as you fill it, so the afternoon heat matters more than the morning drop-off.

Wet Ground and Soft Lawns
A roll-off truck and a loaded container are heavy. After a soaking rain, lawns, gravel shoulders, and dirt lots can turn soft enough that the truck would leave ruts or get stuck. That is one reason a paved driveway is almost always the best placement spot.
If the container has to sit on grass or dirt, plan for the ground at pickup time, not just delivery time. One of our Hampton customers wrote that our driver delayed a pickup by a day because he knew the truck would damage the yard after rain. Waiting a day for the ground to firm up is usually the right call.
Scheduling Around Storms
Severe weather can push deliveries and pickups. If your delivery day looks stormy, call us. Moving a drop by a day is easier than working around a container that cannot be placed safely.
After major storms, demand for roll-offs climbs quickly as homeowners clear fallen limbs and damaged materials. Booking early helps. Our storm debris cleanup guide covers sizing and what can go in the bin after a storm.
Weather Checklist for Your Rental
- Check the forecast for the whole rental window, not just delivery day.
- Choose paved placement over grass or dirt whenever you can.
- Lay plywood on asphalt in summer and under heavy loads any time of year.
- Keep a tarp and bungee cords on hand if rain is likely.
- Know your weight allowance and remember that wet debris counts.
- Call early if storms or soft ground could affect delivery or pickup.
Loading Tips for Wet Weather
- Load absorbent materials like carpet, drywall, and mattresses on dry days when you can, and cover the container between loads.
- Let brush and yard waste dry for a day or two before loading if your schedule allows.
- Keep the heaviest items on the bottom and spread the weight evenly.
- If rain has soaked a heavy load, tell us before pickup so there are no surprises.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does rain make a dumpster heavier?
Yes. Roll-off containers are open-topped, and absorbent debris like drywall, carpet, and yard waste soaks up water. That added weight counts toward your weight allowance.
Should I cover my dumpster when it rains?
A heavy-duty tarp secured with bungee cords keeps rain off your debris. Fold it back before pickup, and keep the load below the top rail.
Can a dumpster damage my driveway in hot weather?
Asphalt softens in summer heat and a loaded container can leave impressions. Use plywood under the container and ask for a morning delivery.
Will you pick up a dumpster after heavy rain?
If the ground is too soft for the truck, waiting a day for it to firm up can prevent ruts and damage. We will work with you on timing.
Can I reschedule delivery because of weather?
Call us at (678) 306-9993 if storms are forecast on your delivery day. Adjusting the drop by a day is often the safest option.
