What Deck and Landscaping Projects Produce
A deck tear-off produces long, bulky material: decking boards, joists, beams, posts, railings, stairs, and a lot of screws and hardware. Landscaping work adds a different kind of debris: branches, brush, shrubs, sod, mulch, and leaves.
Lumber takes up space in awkward shapes, while green waste is light when dry and heavy when wet. Planning for both is what keeps the job inside one container.
Which Dumpster Size Fits Your Project
Yard cleanup or small landing deck: 10 yard
Brush piles, seasonal yard cleanups, and small decks fit in a 10 yard yard-waste dumpster.
Larger landscaping job or mid-size deck: 15 yard
Tree limb removal and bigger landscaping projects that outgrow the 10 yard fit well in a 15 yard roll-off for landscaping.
Full deck tear-off: 20 yard (most common)
Deck demolitions are one of the most common jobs for the 20 yard dumpster for deck demos, which holds about 110 to 130 bags of debris.
Large deck plus a full landscaping overhaul: 30 yard
Multi-level decks or a deck combined with major yard work may need a 30 yard container.
Weight: Treated Lumber, Sod, and Wet Green Waste
Each container includes a weight allowance: 1 ton on the 10 yard, 1.5 tons on the 15 yard, 2 tons on the 20 yard, and 4 tons on the 30 yard. Weight over the allowance is $85 per ton.
Pressure-treated lumber is denser than it looks, and sod and wet brush can be surprisingly heavy after a rain. If you can, let green waste dry for a day or two before loading. Our weight limit guide for contractors explains how tonnage is calculated.
What Goes In and What Needs Special Handling
Accepted
- Decking, joists, posts, and railings
- Pressure-treated lumber
- Branches, brush, and shrubs
- Sod, leaves, and mulch
- Old fencing and lattice
Needs Special Handling
- Concrete footings and pavers
- Dirt and fill
- Stain, sealer, and paint cans
- Fuel and yard chemicals
- Tires and batteries
Concrete footings, pavers, and stone do not belong in a standard roll-off. If you have a lot of them, our concrete-only roll-off is built for that material. Standard containers do not accept dirt, so call (678) 306-9993 before loading soil. For more detail, see our accepted materials list.
How to Combine a Deck Demo and Yard Cleanup in One Rental
- Demo the deck first. Load boards and joists flat along the floor of the container, running the long way.
- Cut long pieces down. Posts and beams that stick up waste space and can make the load unsafe to haul.
- Add yard debris on top. Brush, leaves, and small branches settle into the gaps between lumber.
- Keep it below the top rail. Nothing should stick out above the sides. Our dumpster loading tips show how to get the most out of each cubic yard.
After a storm, the same approach works for fallen limbs and damaged fencing. Our storm debris cleanup guide covers that situation.
Placement on a Residential Lot
The driveway is the best spot. It is firm enough for the truck and the loaded container, and it keeps the bin close to the work. The truck needs about 60 feet of straight-line access. Soft lawns, septic areas, and slopes are not good placement spots.
Plywood under the container helps protect the driveway surface. See how to prep your driveway for delivery for a full checklist, and the dumpster permit guide for middle Georgia if the container has to go on the street.
A 20 yard starts at $410 for a 5-day rental, plus tax, with 7, 10, and 14-day options. Extra days are $15 each.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size dumpster do I need to tear down a deck?
Most full deck tear-offs fit in a 20 yard dumpster. A small landing or platform deck can fit in a 10 or 15 yard, and a large multi-level deck combined with yard work may need a 30 yard.
Can I put pressure-treated lumber in a dumpster?
Yes. Decking, joists, posts, and railings, including pressure-treated lumber, are accepted in standard roll-off dumpsters. Treated lumber is dense, so keep the weight allowance in mind.
Can I put sod and yard waste in the same dumpster as deck lumber?
Yes. Sod, branches, brush, and leaves can go in with the lumber. Load the lumber flat first, then add yard debris on top to fill the gaps.
Can concrete deck footings go in a standard dumpster?
No. Concrete footings, pavers, and stone belong in our 20 yard concrete dumpster, not a standard roll-off. Call (678) 306-9993 if you are not sure how to handle them.
Can I put dirt in a roll-off dumpster?
Standard roll-off dumpsters do not accept dirt. Call (678) 306-9993 before loading soil so we can tell you your options.
